Put sociology to use:

Issues 16,17,18

In order to understand what we truly believe in we must understand both sides of an issue. How can we know what we believe if we don't know what we disagree with?

Objective: The purpose of this is that authentic application of relating what we have learned in class to the world around us is vital to understanding it. These readings and lessons will serve to help us gain a better sociological imagination and grasp a deeper understanding of our world and the issues that face it.

Directions: Click on and read the two opposing sides of one of the following topics related to Deviance & Crime:

a. Issue 16: Is Street Crime More Harmful Than White Collar Crime?

b. Issue 17: Should Drug Use Be Decriminalized?

c. Issue 18: Does the Threat of Terrorism Warrant Curtailment of Civil Liberties?

Then complete the following for both readings.

1. Authors Arguements
Discuss three statements, facts, or opinions the author uses to make their argument for each reading (YES & NO). 1 point each = 6 pts.
A statement, fact, or opinion is a summary of a sentence or paragraph that describes what the author is saying about the issue.
  • Example of one: Hymowitz says that there is a difference between kids of today and kids of the 1960's. 1960's kids were anti-establishment. They were sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll. Todays kids do believe in discipline and respect for adults.

2. Quotes
Write down one quote from each reading that gives a good example of how the author feels. (YES & NO) 1 point each = 2 pts.
A quote is one that you feel sums up what the author's opinion is.
  • Example: "Today Americans are consciously, deliberately embracing ideas about sex, marriage, children, and the American dream that are coalscing into a viable-though admitteldy much altered- sort of bourgeois normality."

3. Opinion
Write an opinion about which side of the argument you agree with and why. (Minimum of six sentences) 2 points each = 12 points
* Complete 1-3 on a word document and save it for the next portion of the assignment.
